Hopeful Politics...without God? (or, the inescapable eschaton)

Leithart is at it again, saying everything first, that I wish I could say, like Nietzsche did to Freud. ;)

This is a fascinating little apologetic, especially in the polarized and politically charged milieu of our time. There are partisans, but they have hope none the less. Nihilism can never form a party. This reminds me of reading Derrida in my MA program and being startled by his repeated reference to eschatology and 'future hope' themes. His system had no place for it, but he was totally unable, qua human, to do away with it.

No one doubts that the rhetoric of hope is powerful. The question is why.
